Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Boiling and Topping Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup baking soda For boiling
  • 1 large egg, beaten For brushing
  • Sliced almonds For fingernails
  • Green food coloring (optional) For spooky effect
  • Sugar For sprinkling

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Stir in the flour and salt until a dough forms.
  • Flour your countertop and knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth.

Shaping and Boiling

  • Divide the dough into small portions (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball into a finger shape, tapering the ends.
  • Press a sliced almond onto the tip of each pretzel for a fingernail.
  • In a pot, bring 4 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Carefully add the pretzels one or two at a time, boiling for about 30 seconds before placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Baking

  • Brush the boiled pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) and bake the pretzels for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Optionally, mix a drop of green food coloring into your beaten egg for a spooky sheen.

Notes

These pretzels will look great even if they’re not perfectly finger-shaped. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 days or freeze for longer storage.
