Ingredients

For the Cupcakes

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

For the Frosting and Decoration

  • 1 can chocolate frosting 16 oz
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup water for spiderweb design
  • pieces Black licorice for decoration, if desired

Instructions

Baking the Cupcakes

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and 1 cup of water. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  • Line your cupcake pan with liners and fill each cup about two-thirds full with the batter.
  • Place in the oven and bake for about 18-20 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting and Decorating

  • After the cupcakes have cooled, spread the chocolate frosting on top generously.
  • In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar with 1/4 cup of water until smooth.
  • Using a piping bag or a plastic sandwich bag with a corner snipped off, pipe a spiral shape starting from the center of the cupcake.
  • Use a toothpick or skewer to drag lines from the center to the edge, creating a web effect.
  • Top with little spiders made from black licorice or use candy spiders if you can find them.

Notes

Don’t worry if your frosting has some imperfections; that’s part of the charm! Feel free to get creative with the design by adding edible glitter or more Halloween-themed decorations.
