Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup milk

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • to taste black food coloring (optional)

For the Spiderweb Decoration

  • 1 cup white fondant or candy melts
  • to taste black licorice or chocolate candies for spiders (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with paper liners.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Mix in the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk until you achieve a smooth batter. If you'd like, you can add some food coloring for a spooky touch.

Baking

  • Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with the batter. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow cooling completely.

Frosting

  • While cupcakes cool, beat the softened butter for the frosting until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until smooth. Adjust milk for desired consistency, then add black food coloring if you want a spooky look.
  • Once cooled, frost each cupcake generously.

Decoration

  • Melt the white fondant or candy melts and use a piping bag to create a spiderweb pattern on top of the frosting. If using licorice or chocolate candies, place them on top as decorations.

Notes

If you want to change the flavor profile, consider adding some cocoa powder or using different extracts like almond for a unique twist. Don't worry if your spiderweb looks a bit uneven; it just adds to the charm and homemade feel of the treat! For an even more festive touch, serve these cupcakes with a side of moist red velvet cupcakes. These cupcakes can be baked a day in advance. Just frost them the day you plan to serve for the best taste and texture. Store any leftover cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If it’s super hot outside, you might want to refrigerate them to keep the frosting from melting.
