Ingredients

For the Cupcakes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

For the Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tbsp milk as needed for consistency
  • White chocolate or icing for the spider web design to create the web design on top

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your cupcake tray with paper liners.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add in the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, water, and apple cider vinegar. Mix until just combined; a few lumps are okay!
  • Scoop the batter into the lined cupcake tray, filling each liner about two-thirds full.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting and Decoration

  • While the cupcakes cool, beat the softened butter in a bowl until creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
  • Add milk as needed to achieve a smooth consistency.
  • Once the cupcakes are completely cool, generously frost each one with your chocolate frosting.
  • Melt the white chocolate or prepare the icing, and use a piping bag to create a spiral on top of the frosted cupcakes.
  • Start from the center and work your way outwards, then use a toothpick to drag out lines to resemble a spider web.

Notes

If short on time, consider using store-bought chocolate frosting. For added flair, decorate with plastic spiders or edible glitter.
