Ingredients

For the Mulled Wine

  • 1 bottle red wine A fruity variety works best
  • 1 piece orange Sliced
  • 1 piece lemon Sliced
  • 2-3 sticks cinnamon sticks
  • 4-5 pieces whole cloves
  • 2-3 pieces star anise
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar To taste
  • 1 splash brandy Optional for an extra kick

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by slicing the orange and lemon.

Combining Ingredients

  • In a large pot, pour in your bottle of red wine. Add the orange and lemon slices, followed by the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and your choice of sweetener.

Heating

  • Heat the mixture over medium to medium-low heat. Don’t let it boil—just warm it up until it’s steaming.

Adjusting Flavor

  • While your wine is warming, give it a little taste. If it needs more sweetness, add a bit more honey or sugar. A splash of brandy can also enhance the flavor if you’re feeling adventurous!

Serving

  • Once heated through and fragrant, strain out the spices and fruit. Pour into festive mugs, and garnish with an extra slice of orange or a cinnamon stick for presentation.

Notes

Let the wine simmer for 30 minutes to an hour for richer flavors. Use a decent quality wine. Experiment with flavors by adding nutmeg, cardamom, or vanilla bean.
