Ingredients
  

Doughnut Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg for added flavor
  • 1/2 cup milk can substitute with almond or oat milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups oil for frying canola or vegetable oil

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat oil in a large pot or deep fryer over medium heat, about 375°F.
Mixing the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, mix milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla.
  3. Stir the wet mixture into the dry mixture until a soft dough forms.
Shaping the Doughnuts
  1. Roll out the dough on a floured countertop to about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
Frying
  1. Drop a few doughnuts at a time into the hot oil and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden.
  2. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a cooling rack lined with paper towels.
Finishing Touches
  1. Once cool, dust with powdered sugar, dip in chocolate glaze, or add sprinkles.

Notes

If you don't have a thermometer, use the classic method of dropping a small piece of dough into the oil. If it sizzles and floats, the oil is ready. Let the dough rest if it seems tough before rolling.
