Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Plus a little extra for dusting
  • 1 packet active dry yeast About 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • 1.5 cups warm water Not too hot, or you might scare the yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Bread loves a little sweetness
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Optional but adds fabulous flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the activated yeast mixture along with the olive oil (if using). Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Flour your countertop and dump the dough out. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a clean bowl coated with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size (about 1-2 hours).
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Let the bread cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Slice once cooled slightly.

Notes

You can add herbs, cheese, or nuts for flavor variations. Store any leftovers wrapped in plastic at room temperature or freeze for future use.
