  • 10 pieces apples (mix of sweet and tart, like Fuji and Granny Smith) Choose a mix for balanced flavor.
  • 1 pieces orange, quartered
  • 1 cup sugar Adjust based on your sweetness preference.
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon allspice berries
  • 2 pieces cinnamon sticks
  • 8 cups water Add enough to cover the apples and spices.

Preparation

  • Begin by washing and quartering your apples. There’s no need to remove the cores or peel them.
  • Toss in the quartered orange, sugar, cloves, allspice berries, and cinnamon sticks.
  • Pour in water to cover the apples and spices, about 8 cups.

Cooking

  • Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer and let it simmer uncovered for about 2 hours.
  • Once the apples are soft, use a potato masher to mash everything together.
  • Strain the mixture using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a large bowl.
  • Taste your cider and adjust sweetness or spice levels if desired.

Serving

  • Serve warm or allow it to cool and chill in the refrigerator.

Notes

Using a combination of sweet and tart apples enhances flavor. You can also add more spices like nutmeg or ginger for a twist. Leftover cider can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
