Ingredients

Cookie Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 sticks
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • as needed green gel food coloring optional for color

Decoration

  • Slivered almonds for the fingernails

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until creamy. Add in the vanilla and almond extracts; mix until combined.
  • Gradually mix in the flour and salt. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky. If you wish to add a ghastly green hue, mix in a few drops of green gel food coloring at this stage.
  • Take about a tablespoon of dough and roll it into a finger shape. Use your hands to create knuckles and taper the end for a nail.
  • Place a slivered almond at the tip of each 'finger' to serve as the spooky fingernail.

Baking

  • Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until they turn a light golden color.
  • Allow the cookies to cool for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

Chill the dough if it's too sticky. Consider dipping the fingertips in chocolate or using red icing for extra effect. Make a double batch as these will disappear quickly!
