Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 16 oz fresh mushrooms (button or portobello)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Clean your mushrooms gently with a damp cloth and remove the stems if they’re particularly tough.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, minced garlic, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually add in the buttermilk, stirring until the mixture is smooth with just a few lumps.
  • In a deep skillet or frying pan, pour about an inch of oil and heat it over medium-high. You’ll know it’s ready when a small drop of batter sizzles upon contact.

Cooking

  • Dip each mushroom into the batter, making sure it’s thoroughly coated. Let any excess batter drip off before placing it in the hot oil.
  • Carefully place the battered mushrooms in the hot oil. Fry for about 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally until they’re golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove the mushrooms and drain them on paper towels to soak up any excess oil. Serve immediately—you’ll want those mushrooms crispy and hot!

Notes

Get the kids involved! Allow them to help dip the mushrooms in the batter. Don’t overcrowd the pan; fry them in batches for perfect crunch. Feel free to experiment with flavors by adding cayenne pepper or your favorite herbs.
