Ingredients
  

For the Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure to use room temperature butter for easy mixing.
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened Softened cream cheese helps to create a smooth dough.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Sifted for better mixing.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavor of the dough.
  • 1/2 cup sugar For sweetening the dough.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds extra flavor.

For the Filling

  • 1 cup chocolate chips (or finely chopped chocolate) Choose your favorite chocolate.
  • 1 cup finely chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) Adds crunch; can be omitted if desired.

Other

  • 1 each egg (for egg wash) Gives a golden finish when baked.
  • Powdered sugar for dusting optional For serving, to add sweetness.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Cream together the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth.
  • Blend in the flour and salt until the mixture forms a soft dough.
  • Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.

Rolling and Filling

  • Once chilled, divide the dough into four equal pieces.
  • On a floured surface, roll each piece into a circle about 1/8 inch thick.
  • Sprinkle sugar, chocolate chips, and nuts evenly over the surface of each circle.
  • Use a knife or pizza cutter to slice the dough into 8 wedges.

Shaping and Baking

  • Starting at the wide end of each wedge, roll it towards the point to form a crescent shape.
  • Place each rolled pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Whisk the egg in a small bowl and brush it over the tops of your rugelach.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Allow them to cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Chill the dough to help preserve the shape while baking. Feel free to customize the filling with fruit preserves or spices for added twists.
