Ingredients
  

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers) You can use either option based on your preference.
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 each egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onions, egg, garlic powder, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Mix until everything is well blended and shape into 4 oval patties. Set aside.

Cooking the Steaks

  • In a large skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium heat and add the hamburger patties. Sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through.

Making the Gravy

  • Remove the cooked patties from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté until translucent for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the sautéed onions and stir for about a minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper. Let the gravy simmer until thickened for about 5 minutes.

Combining and Serving

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and let them simmer together for another couple of minutes. Serve hot with sides of your choice.

Notes

Feel free to add mushrooms or bell peppers to the gravy for extra flavor and texture. If your gravy looks lumpy, whisk to smooth it out. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
