main background
Rotten Tomatoes’ critic score, known as the Tomatometer, is the percentage of critics who gave a film a positive review. A film with at least 60% positive reviews is given a fresh tomato, and those with a score below 60% are given a sprinkle. Metacritic calculates a weighted average of critic reviews, giving different weights to each critic and publication based on importance or quality. Scores are displayed in green, yellow, or red, indicating favorable, mixed, or unfavorable reviews, and films with at least an 81% rating are designated as “must-sees.” Both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic track user ratings and allow users to write reviews, although they are displayed separately from critic ratings.
