Ahead of the upcoming Indian Super League season (ISL 2023-24), Mumbai City FC announced that Argentine midfielder Jorge Pereira Diaz has signed a new one-year contract.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper was instrumental in Mumbai City FC’s hugely successful season as the Islanders secured the Indian Super League winners’ shield for the 2022-23 season. Diaz emerged as a key figure, spearheading Mumbai City FC’s lethal offense, scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions. The Argentinian was the third-highest goal-scorer for the Islanders, alongside Greg Stewart and Lalianzuala Chhante.
Speaking about the contract extension, Jorge Pereira Diaz said. “My journey at this club has been nothing short of amazing. We have had great performances as a team and the cohesion on the pitch has been exceptional. I am proud to have been able to contribute to the team’s success last season and I look forward to another incredible season ahead. Coach Dee Buckingham’s vision for the team aligns perfectly with the players, myself included. Everyone here at Mumbai City shares the same direction and we are all committed to achieving success together for our fans and the Mumbai City family.”
Head coach De Buckingham said. “It gives us great pleasure to have Jorge with us for another season. His ability to score goals, but more importantly to connect well with those around him, played a big part in our attacking play last season. His awareness and unselfish play on the ball, combined with his work rate and understanding without the ball, make him an exciting player to build on as we plan for next season. I look forward to working with him further as we look to build and improve our overall game.”
