BANGKOK — Seven people, including four children, died on Monday when strong winds caused the metal roof of a school’s activity center to collapse in northern Thailand, officials said Tuesday.
The latest victim was a 6-year-old boy who died in hospital late Monday after the collapse of Wat Nern Por Primary School, according to the public affairs office in Phichit province, 300 kilometers (185 miles) north of Bangkok.
Several students had entered the activity center to take shelter from the rain when the roof collapsed, the official disaster prevention department said in a Facebook post, and 18 people were hospitalized.
State public relations officer Patchari Siri said four boys, two parents and a member of the school’s cleaning staff died.
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the north of Thailand this week. Monday also marked the official start of the rainy season.
