When tomorrow comes and you decide it’s time to find a new show or movie to watch on HBO Max, you might notice something different. First, the name is dropping the “HBO” and will simply be known as Max going forward. You knew this was coming.
When it becomes Max, it will be a bundled service that features more than just HBO. Later, it will also have Discovery+ content, so all your home, food and travel shows will be within Max. You’ll have all of HBO’s fabulous content, plus the world of fixed ‘uppin’. And actually, most of the content merging started a few weeks ago, in case you haven’t noticed.
The other thing that might throw you off is in the HBO Max app. For some of you, the app will just update (or auto-update) with the new Max experience and you’ll be good to go. For the rest, you may need to download a new Max app.
In an email sent to customers today reminding them of the changes expected on May 23, HBO Max tells its customers about the above situations, but basically says it should be a simple update to the new Max. However, if you need the new app, you’ll be prompted to get it. If you want to get started with it, both Google Play and the App Store have pre-registration links for the new Max app.

Wondering what will happen to your login information and payments? Obviously, your HBO Max subscription continues under the new Max brand, and you basically don’t need to do anything. That means all your payment and login details stay the same in the new app. In addition, your profiles, browsing history, and My List will be stored in Max. While this sounds like a major change, especially since a new app is required, HBO tells us that everything should be a smooth transition, at least for now.
When the new Max launches tomorrow, we’ll see what the subscription prices are. At the moment, HBO Max has disabled the sign-up process, and Max’s website tells us to wait until tomorrow.
