Google is making big AI announcements at I/O 2023. What to know?

Google just announced AI advancements that will have big implications for business leaders, including the first AI search.

The updates were announced at Google’s I/O developer conference. Some of the most important updates include:

  • A new next-generation large language model called PaLM 2. Google says it “performs better at advanced logic tasks including code and math, classification and question answering, translation and multilingualism than our previous state-of-the-art LLMs.”
  • AI features added to search. Google is launching a ‘Search Generative Experience’ that will power conversational search results.
  • New AI writing tools for Gmail.
  • Removal of complex waiting list.
  • Ability to create documents, create slides, and populate spreadsheets with AI in Google Workspace apps like Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

  1. Google is back! The company has been criticized for being slow to respond to AI challenges from Microsoft, OpenAI and others. These updates remind us that Google never really went away, Roetzer says. “There is probably no organization in the world more advanced from an AI perspective than Google.”
  2. But something has changed. Historically, Google hasn’t been motivated to make big moves that could disrupt its lucrative search advertising business. That seems to be changing. “There seems to be a willingness on Google’s part to do things they weren’t willing to do before,” Retzer says.
  3. And now they are uniquely positioned to win. They have thousands of AI and machine learning employees. They have 20+ years of AI research experience. They have data centers and computing that almost no one else has. They have their own specially designed chips for AI (TPU). And they’re sitting on $115 billion in cash (according to their last earnings call), along with 6 million Google Workspace business customers. “I would be a little worried if I was done,” Retzer says.
  4. Wait for the search to fail. Regardless of who wins the AI ​​arms race, search is massively disrupted either way. As we get more and more answers through generative AI, content publishing sites see less traffic, Roetzer says. “It certainly seems like a massive drag on SEO and content publishing for brands.”
  5. And expect the workplace to change—fast. When AI fully permeates Google Workspace, it’s going to be really interesting, Retzer says. “I think not releasing this stuff out into the world when knowledge workers have no real training for it and everybody in the organization all of a sudden has these tools is going to be a game changer and we’re not ready for it.” says Retzer.
