It’s been an amazing season for the NFL with many exciting games and announcements. Sports bettors were able to participate in NFL integration thanks to BetMGM. And now, the Toronto Argonauts send Bethel-Thompson off on a winning note. The veteran quarterback made the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers his new team in 2023 on social media. After helping Toronto win the 22 Gray Cup, Bethel-Thompson became a free agent in early February.

Bethel-Thompson comments on his departure from the CFL

Bethel-Thompson posted on her Instagram account that her new adventure begins with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers and will continue with heavy NFL interest in the fall. He stated that it had nothing to do with the CFL. He declared his admiration for the CFL. He could not miss the opportunity to combine family and football by playing in the USA this season.

The USFL season begins on April 15. The Breakers will host the Pittsburgh Maulers on April 16. Bethel-Thompson’s statement did not immediately receive a response from The Argos.

Bethel-Thompson’s choice is not unexpected. He talked about how difficult it was for him not to see his partner, Chinaka, and his young daughter, Aziza, for a long time during the CFL season after Toronto’s 24-23 championship win over Winnipeg in November. The family played a big role in the decision.

According to Bethel-Thompson, the hardest part of playing soccer is when you leave family and friends behind.

The 34-year-old American has played the past five seasons with Toronto (2017-19, 2021-22) and won a Gray Cup in his debut season there as backup to veteran Ricky Ray.

Last season, the 6’4-foot, 220-pound Bethel-Thompson passed for 4,731 yards, a CFL and career best, with 15 interceptions and 23 touchdowns. He led Toronto (11-7) to a second straight East Division title before completing 19 of his 27 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the Argos’ 34-27 playoff victory over the Montreal Alouettes.

Toronto will now play in the Gray Cup against heavily favored Winnipeg. When Bethel-Thompson dislocated his right thumb late in the fourth quarter, he had completed 15 of 28 passes for 203 yards.

In 2021, Bethel-Thompson solidified his position as Toronto’s starter, winning seven of the team’s nine starts, leading Toronto to a 9–5 record and first place in the East Division. It was the first time the Argos won the conference since 2017.
