Now in its 19th year, the Association of Healthcare Journalists’ annual event Awards for Excellence in Health Journalism It is a professional and public endorsement of the importance of healthcare as a stroke. It takes considerable time, dedication and care to select the most powerful, moving and effective stories from all the submissions. For that, we thank dozens of volunteer judges who make it all possible.
The 2022 competition invited 429 entries in 14 categories and the winners have been announced at the annual national conference of St. Louis in March. The judges work in two teams, over two rounds, to select the winners, and the judges say the work is gratifying and inspiring. Many have donated their time to the AHCJ competition for several years, while others volunteered for the first time this year.
Each volunteer judge – they are all working or retired journalists or journalism instructors – plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and independence of the annual awards. The contest needs new judges each year, and serving as a judge does not disqualify you from participating in the contest. Our committee works to avoid conflicts of interest from judges as well as reporters/their media outlets. The Awards for Excellence in Health Journalism are overseen and supported by the AHCJ Competition Committee, co-chaired by AHCJ Board Members Kerry Feibel and Christine Herman.
