A man has been arrested after a car crashed into the gates of Downing Street

A man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving after crashing a car in Downing Street, London.

The car crashed into the gates at around 4.20pm on Thursday, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Photos on social media showed the car surrounded by emergency vehicles.

Downing Street is a street in central London where the official residences and offices of the British Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer are located.

Uzhayin added that no one was injured.

In a statement on Twitter, the Metropolitan Police said: “A car crashed into the gates of Downing Street in Whitehall at around 4.20pm.

“Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of causing criminal damage and dangerous driving.

“There is no information about the victims. The inquiries are ongoing.”

After the incident, large parts of Whitehall were closed to the public and vehicles, and pedestrians were diverted from the main thoroughfare around Downing Street in central London.

There is a significant police presence in the area.
