The Detroit Lions have another player under investigation for violating the NFL’s gaming policy, according to The Athletic.
Back in April, the Detroit Lions had four players suspended by the NFL for gambling violations. Wide receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were suspended six games for betting on non-NFL games at a Lions facility. Meanwhile, safety CJ Moore and wide receiver Quintess Cephus have been suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games, forcing them to miss at least the 2023 season. Detroit then waived Berryhill, Moore and Cefus, and Williams was the team’s only suspended player.

According to Kalin Kahler of The Athletic, the NFL is investigating another Lions player for a possible gambling policy violation. The Athletic did not name the player because the investigation is ongoing, but it was found to be “not a prominent member of the 2022 team.” The player in question has yet to be interviewed by an NFL investigator, according to Kahler.

In addition to the Lions, there was one other player suspended in the initial wave of Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Thon’s gambling penalties, who was banned indefinitely for betting on NFL games. Like Cefus and Moore, Toney can apply for reinstatement after at least one season.
Williams spoke to reporters after the Lions held team activities this past week and commented on his suspension. He said he was “not aware” of the policy until he was informed of his suspension. Williams said he will not appeal the league’s punishment, which makes him eligible to return for Week 7.
“It hit me out of the blue, and it hit a few other players around the league and my team out of the blue,” Williams told the Detroit Free Press. “I wasn’t aware of this situation, but as it happened, like I said, I took it on the chin, I was ready to move on as things were moving forward and I got the consequences, so that was my whole plan moving forward for: of things and just looking forward to better days.”
This latest investigation into a Lions player comes as the league’s “second wave of potential gambling policy violations,” according to ESPN.
Again, it is currently unknown if there will be any final punishment for the Lions player. But it’s something to watch this offseason.
